About Us

Background

At CambridgeBPI, we train mental health professionals in the delivery of an evidence-based mental health recovery programme for young people aged 11 to 17, based on the BPI method.

Our company is driven by three founding principles:

  • Training mental health professionals in the best practice use of BPI
  • Leading the research into BPI’s successful application amongst young people
  • Championing BPI as an effective, affordable, timely solution to adolescent depression

Treating adolescent depression

Depression can strike anyone at any age.  When it affects adolescents, the impact can be very challenging for both young people and their loved ones.

Feeling depressed means sleeping poorly, difficulty getting things done, and experiencing lowered self worth  as well as lower standards of overall wellbeing.  Depressed adolescents often have difficulty sleeping, are low in energy, become indecisive, are disinterested in seeing their friends or getting on with their schoolwork.

Effective methods of treating adolescent depression are critical to helping young people and their families.  BPI is a proven, clinically effective method of treatment.

Why BPI?

Child and adolescent mental health and wellbeing form the cornerstone of our expertise, and we have seen first-hand how effective BPI is in treating young people struggling with depression.  BPI can be rapidly learned and implemented by mental health professionals of different backgrounds including psychiatry, nursing, clinical psychology, and those with existing specialist skills such as family therapy.

BPI is also teachable to and useable by child and family workers, social workers, and children’s wellbeing practitioners, giving them therapeutic skills as part of their clinical mental health toolkit.

The BPI training and treatment programme means favourable results can be achieved faster than alternative forms of therapeutic treatment, making it both time-sensitive and cost-effective for care providers.

The Cambridge BPI method

Drawing on our experience in the field of BPI and adolescent psychiatry, we share our practice-based insights and provide the practical tools needed to deliver BPI to adolescent patients.  BPI teaching sessions are delivered through video links and are both accessible and richly informative.  The method leaves trainees confident and ready to begin the supervised application of BPI.  Through our ongoing BPI workshops, we continue to help prepare trainees for the rewarding process of providing this effective psychosocial treatment to young people.

The Cambridge BPI story

CambridgeBPI (formerly GKMH Limited) was founded in 2019 by the current directors, with the support of the Technology Transfer team of Cambridge Enterprise – which has also become a minority shareholder.  CambridgeBPI has a worldwide licence from the University of Cambridge, to use the intellectual property underpinning BPI for the implementation and roll-out of this new talking therapy.

The company founders are renowned experts who have been engaged at the University of Cambridge in researching Brief Psychosocial Intervention (BPI) over the last 25 years, establishing lots of evidence on BPI’s effectiveness.
